In-Office Whitening

Teeth whitening is an option for people who have stained their teeth from one of any number of sources.  Teeth staining can come from drinking coffee, tea or soda or smoking tobacco.  Two methods of teeth whitening are the Zoom teeth whitening system and Opalescence Boost system.  In some respects, such as application time, which is typically about one hour for each, the methods are very similar while also having differences.

Whitening Method:

  • Opalescence boost uses a combination of chemicals to achieve whiter teeth
  • Zoom uses a high-powered laser to whiten teeth

Efficacy:  While both systems are generally successful and only require about an hour, Boost’s results are normally more permanent.  Both treatments generally leave teeth whiter, but it is common for Zoom users to have two regularly scheduled follow-up appointments to get teeth touched up.

Risks: Boost has a tendency to cause extreme tooth sensitivity if the chemical mixture is applied for too long. Zoom users run the risk of encountering discomfort, burns and tissue damage because of the laser.

Other benefits: Opalescence Boost’s chemical formula includes fluoride and potassium nitrate so it strengthens enamel and increases cavity resistance while whitening.  The Zoom laser system does not include chemicals so users still need to apply fluoride and potassium nitrate in order to gain those benefits.

These one-hour treatments can result in your teeth being up to nine shades lighter.

Home Whitening

Home whitening consists of custom trays made for your teeth. Whitening gel (carbamide peroxide) is placed inside the tray and is worn 2 times a day for 45-60 minutes each time. Results vary and can take two to six weeks or more. There is a significant difference between the comfort and safety of dentist-designed trays compared to over-the-counter one-size-fits all trays.

Internal Teeth Whitening

When you have a single tooth that is discolored from the inside, sometimes your tooth can be whitened from the inside out. This usually takes two to three visits in the office and is done after the tooth has received root canal therapy. The inside of the tooth is re-accessed after your root canal procedure and we use a whitening gel to brighten the affected area from the inside out.
